Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali is a highly acclaimed Pakistani musical group led by brothers Rizwan Mujahid Ali Khan and Muazzam Mujahid Ali Khan. As the nephews of the legendary Qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, they serve as the contemporary torchbearers of a 500-year-old family musical lineage. They have earned global recognition for bridging traditional Sufi devotional music with modern audiences.
Musical Lineage and Training
The brothers belong to a prestigious gharana (musical family lineage) with deep roots in Indian classical and Sufi music:
- Grandfather: Mubarak Ali Khan, who taught Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the art of Qawwali.
- Father: Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan, who initially trained the brothers until his passing in 1996.
- Uncle: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who personally mentored and polished their craft.
Musical Style and Performances
Rizwan and Muazzam perform strictly in the traditional Qawwali arrangement:
- They perform while sitting on the ground, a practice they believe brings them closer to the divine.
- Their music features intricate call-and-response vocal patterns, heavy rhythmic handclapping, and backing by the harmonium and tabla.
- They sing in Urdu, Punjabi, and Farsi, using intense vocal repetitions designed to induce a state of spiritual ecstasy (wajad).
- Due to their high-energy delivery, music critics have fondly dubbed them “the Qawwali Clash”.
Career Highlights and Albums
The group made their international breakthrough at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Rivermead Festival in England in 1998. They later signed with Real World Records, producing a long-standing discography:
- A Better Destiny (2001)
- Day of Colours (2004)
- At the Feet of the Beloved (2025)
They regularly tour globally, headlining major international stages like the Southbank Centre, the Commonwealth Games, and Copenhagen’s Roskilde Festival.
